Leonid. M. LytvynenkoLeonid. M. Lytvynenko was born in Kharkiv into the family of employees. His parents were: Father - Lytvynenko Mykola Maksymovych, and Mother - Lytvynenko Olga Heorgiivna. Since 1945 till 1954, he was studying at the secondary school in Kharkiv, which he finished with Gold Medal. In 1954 he entered and in 1959 graduated from the Department of Radio Physics of A. Gorki State University of Kharkiv (now V. Karazin National University of Kharkiv) by specialty of “radiophysics and electronics”. Since 1959 till 1966, he belonged with the Elektropribor Design Office (Kharkiv) in the capacity of engineer (1959-1961), then group leader (1961-1963), and laboratory chief (1963-1966). In 1965, while keeping on working as laboratory chief, he defended in the State University of Kharkiv a Ph.D thesis entitled “Electromagnetic wave diffraction by multielement gratings”, in which he built a strict theory of wave diffraction by plane gratings of metal strips, based on the use of partial converse of operator of boundary value problem by the “Riemann-Gilbert problem method”. Since 1966 till 1969, he is associate professor of Kharkiv Institute of Radio Electronics. Since 1969 till 1973, he is department head, scientific deputy director (1973-1985), since 1980 – head of department of radio-astronomy of A. Usikov Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics of Ukrainian SSR Acad. Sci. In 1972, in the State University of Kyiv, he defended a doctoral thesis in Phys. & Maths in the theory of electromagnetic wave diffraction by periodic structures and its applications in radiophysics. Since 1977, he has an academic status as Professor of radiophysics, quantum radiophysics including. In 1982, he was elected Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Leonid. M. Lytvynenko Professor Lytvynenko established and headed the Institute of Radio Astronomy NAS-Ukraine (IRA NASU) and has been heading it until now. IRA NASU was established in 1985 in Kharkiv on the basis of the Department of Radio Astronomy of the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics of NAS-Ukraine. The Institute carries out some basic research in the following directions: radio-astronomy of objects in Universe, remote sounding of geospace and solar system, physical principles of design and construction of radio telescopes and remote sounding radar systems. Along with the basic research efforts, the applied researches are carried out, as well as technological innovations, new devices and radar systems developed for different kind applications at decameter, microwave, millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. IRA NASU is the leading institution in radio-astronomy researches in Ukraine.

In 1992, Professor Lytvynenko was elected Member (Academician) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Leonid. M. Lytvynenko The major scientific interests of Professor Lytvynenko lie in the fields of the theory of wave diffraction and propagation, physics and technology of millimeter and submillimeter waves, theory of antenna systems, design of generators of microwave frequencies, creation of radio engineering systems, development of physical principles of construction and design improvement of radio-astronomy instruments, and radio-astronomy research at decameter and millimeter radio wavelengths. He has developed the theory of electromagnetic wave diffraction and propagation in complex and multilayer periodic structures, suggested the method of “successive refinements” for the solution of operator equations to which the problems of radiophysics and electronics are reduced. He also developed the concept of using the operator of reflection of semi-infinite structures in the theory of wave diffraction by multilayer periodic structures. He suggested and developed a number of in essence quite new quasioptical elements and systems for millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. Together with Professor Shulga, V. M. (Member of NASU) he initiated in Ukraine the very first radio-astronomy researches at millimeter wavelengths.

Professor Lytvynenko has over 250 scientific papers, 11 inventions, and 5 monographs: “Wave diffraction by gratings” (Kharkiv University Press, 1973, coauthored), “Spectral operators of scattering in wave diffraction by plane screens” (Kyiv, “Naukova Dumka”, 1984, coauthored), “Computational investigation of electrostatic fields in periodic structures” (Kyiv, “Naukova Dumka”, 1986, coauthored), “Lunar Odyssey” (Kyiv, “Akademperiodyka”, 2007, coauthored), collective monograph under his edition (jointly with Corresponding Member of NASU Yampolski, Y. M.) “Electromagnetic manifestations of geophysical effects in Antarctic Continent” (2005), “Wave diffraction by periodic multilayer structures” (UK, Cambridge Scientific Publishers Ltd, 2012, coauthored).Leonid. M. Lytvynenko

In 1976, Professor Lytvynenko founded and since then has been headed the radio-astronomy branch at the Radiophysics Department of the Kharkiv National University. There, under his scientific supervision, more than 20 Ph.D. and doctoral theses have been defended. L. M. Lytvynenko is Honored Professor (2002) and Honorary Doctor (2012) of V. Karazin National University of Kharkiv.

Professor Lytvynenko is Member of Bureau of Physics and Astronomy Department of NASU. He is Editor-in-Chief of scientific journal “Radiofizika i Radioastronomia” (“Radio Physics and Radio Astronomy”) being published since 1995. He is Member of Ukraine’s State Prize Committee in science and technology. Professor Lytvynenko is Senior Member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Vice-President of Ukrainian Committee of International Union of Radio Science (URSI).

In 1986, Professor Lytvynenko was decorated with the order “Sign of Honor”, and in 2008, with the “Order of Merit”, 3rd class. He is Ukraine’s State Prize Laureate in science and technology for theoretical R&D of new radio electronics systems (1987), Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (since 1997). In 2005, one of the Solar system planetoids was named after him by the decision of the International Astronomical Union.
